Begin Again: North Cape to Cape Town by Bicycle.
A journey of presence, endurance, and awakening across continents.
This route using the CAR option on Google Maps includes highways and other roadways that I will avoid on my bicycle journey. However, it also provides a useful estimate of the distance on road infrastructure from North Cape to Cape Town. I always start with a map like this one when I'm in the early phases of route planning.
Begin Again is the second of my three planned global cycling expeditions. Launching on July 15, 2025, I will fly from Denver, Colorado to Helsinki, Finland, then take a train to Rovaniemi before beginning my ride to North Cape on July 17. From Europe’s northern tip, I will cycle south to Cape Town, South Africa – a journey of 13,000 to 15,000 miles by bicycle. Unlike my first journey, Climate Zero (2023–2024), which took me from Cartwright, Labrador to Ushuaia, Argentina—a 17,500-mile odyssey during which I planted 5,000 trees to fully offset my 52-year lifetime carbon footprint--Begin Again shifts the focus inward.
Begin Again centers on Buddhist mindfulness, awareness, and the practice of returning to the present moment. Alongside daily physical challenges and logistical hurdles, I will share insights from the road and reflections on cultivating awareness and my journey towards becoming a good human. Like Climate Zero, this journey is about more than crossing continents; it is a meditation in motion and an invitation to all who follow to reset, reflect, and live with intention.
The third and final expedition will complete my planetary exploration, beginning somewhere at the western edge of Ireland and carrying me east across Europe, Asia, and Australia. From there, I will traverse northwestern North America beginning in Anchorage, Alaska, before riding across Canada and back into the United States to my childhood home in Franklin, Massachusetts, outside of Boston. Together, these three rides form a human-powered transect of Earth and a lifelong message of possibility, resilience, and conscious presence.
Much more information will be added to this webpage as the journey unfolds. Please check back regularly for new updates, stories, and insights from the road.

YouTube Videos,
Use this link to visit my YouTube channel where I'll be assembling videos from the tour as it unfolds. Concurrently, I'll also be publishing shorter videos and images to my Instagram and Facebook channels.
Satellite Tracking: location tracking every 10 minutes
For the second time in my touring history, I'll be carrying a small satellite tracker, a refurbished inReach Mini 2 from Garmin that I purchased on Amazon shortly before the prelude to the Climate Zero began. As I prepare for a 15 July 2025 flight to Finland to initiate Begin Again, the inReach Mini 2 is already sending my location every ten minutes to an online map and the data are visible to anyone (no accounts needed) on the internet, here's the link. Be sure to click the view all option after the map loads to see the entire Climate Zero journey and Begin Again as it unfolds in real time.
RideWithGPS: details of my route
As of 2 August 2025, I've begun uploading GPS tracking data from my Garmin 1030 Solar device to my RideWithGPS account, where each recorded point adds another thread to the intricate fabric of this journey. Here's the link to that collection. The GPS data includes not just the roads I follow, but the contours of the land, the small villages I pass through, and the pauses and detours that inevitably shape every long ride. Whether you're interested in the broader arc of my journey or the finer details of daily movement, you're welcome to explore this growing archive as it accumulates all the way to Cape Town.
For this expedition, I’ve taken a different approach than on past rides. Before even turning a pedal, I pre-assembled a large portion of the route—specifically, the entire European segment. This is something I’ve never done before, and it offers a rare opportunity to preview the intended path in full. While the static map image on this site gives a basic sense of direction, it only scratches the surface. If you're curious to explore the route in greater depth—with full interactivity, elevation profiles, and daily segments—please visit my public RideWithGPS collection using the link provided. It’s a rich resource for anyone inspired by long-distance cycling or simply curious about the road ahead.
