✝ The 2016 Austin Rattler was a sold-out event and the largest to date to be held at Rocky Hill Ranch (see starting line photo here), 770 solo riders registered plus another 80 team participants. The numbers of competitors provided above, overall and age class, include only finishers. The Salida Big Friggin' Loop (SBFL), part of the Colorado Endurance Series, offered two time deductions in 2016. The first, 30 minutes off for collecting a Futurity Chip; the second, a 100 minute deduction for dropping Cottonwood Trail (most of the way) into Salida. I completed both which gave me an adjusted total time on the course of 8 hrs 35 minutes. However, my actual (unadjusted) time on the course was 10 hrs 45 minutes. Also note, my distance, 116 miles, in the SBFL includes a roughly 23 minute off-course blunder on the Colorado Trail near Cottonwood Creek. Actual course mileage was closer to 110 miles. Overall 15 competitors finished the SBFL long loop, see website for more details. Firecracker 50 results include only finishers, DNFs are not provided by Mavsports (event organizer). Overall results for the Firecracker include only solo participants. At the Silver Rush 50, very dry / dusty conditions on the course made for loose / dangerous descending. Consequently, I had to touch my brakes far too much to keep from finishing in the trees, or worse into a pack of riders coming up the same jeep trail. It was also a hot day from the gun, and an altered course (added single track at the end) from what I've raced in previous years. All these thoughts led me to conclude that I likely gave my best performance to date at the SR50 in 2016 despite an only marginally improved time compared to previous years (see below).

Numbers may be finishers, DNFs are often not reported by vendors. For more details click on the results to move to the vendor results webpage. 12 Hrs Mesa Verde was cancelled after two laps due to wet conditions, I was scheduled to take the 3rd, 6th, and 9th laps within my 3-person all male team so never started! Yet, my two NCGR teammates (Brent Beck, RJ Morris) finished strong leaving us in a respectable 4th place after two very difficult laps through mud, rain, snow and cold. Maverick Sports (Firecracker 50) does not report DNFs, results include only finishers. For the third year in a row, I punctured in the Silver Rush 50, this time on a climb that presented no concern for flats, no luck.

In 2013, fixing a flat tire led to delays in the Firecracker 50, Leadville 100 and the second Lory Park Mountain Challenge. But thanks to these experiences, I'm getting better at fixing flats in a hurry! Nonetheless, these fixes cost me some time. For example, my moving time (off my Garmin Forerunner 305) was 8 hrs 19 minutes in the Leadville 100, the flat cost me about 9 minutes and during this time I was passed by about 50 riders! I also had mechanical issues (four stops) during the Firebird 40 in 2013, probably my worst performance to date. I experienced far fewer problems in 2014. In part, fewer problems were the result of a tire change. Since about June 2014 I've settled on Specialized Fast Trak Control tires front (2.2) and rear (2.0) for all of my racing and training. I'm grateful to the owner of Peloton Cycles, Robin Torres, for suggesting that I try-out the Fast Traks ...
